Why are haze-causing fires hard to put out?

Assoc Prof Sanjay Swarup, Deputy Director of the NUS Environmental Research Institute, shared that the fires in the peat swamp forests of Sumatra and Kalimantan are extremely difficult to put out because even after the flames on the surface have been doused, peat fires will continue to burn underground.
