NUS Ranked Second in Latest Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings

The National University of Singapore (NUS) maintained its position as one of Asia's top two universities in the latest Asia University Rankings published by the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine.

The rankings, which are based on the same performance indicators and methodology as the established THE World University Rankings, uses 13 separate performance indicators to examine each university's strengths against its core missions of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. According to THE Asia University Rankings 2014, the top 100 universities in Asia hail from 13 countries or regions, including Turkey and the Middle East.

NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan said, “We are pleased to be placed among the top two universities in Asia in the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings. This is an affirmation of NUS' strong international reputation, and a recognition of the University's quality education and world-class research. We will continue to innovate to deliver world-class education with both a global and Asian perspective, and to spearhead groundbreaking research that will benefit Singapore, Asia and beyond.”

Mr Phil Baty, Editor, Times Higher Education Rankings, said, “The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings and Asia University Rankings are the only global rankings to cover the full range of a modern world-class university's mission – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. We analyse around 50 million research paper citations and 6 million research papers, we gather hundreds of thousands of data points on hundreds of institutions, and we have collected the views of around 60,000 of the world's leading scholars to create our prestigious list. We judge each institution against 13 separate performance indicators, so the THE rankings are the world's most demanding and rigorous test of a university's all-round global excellence.”

Added Mr Baty, “This new ranking of Asia's best universities confirms that NUS is a truly outstanding institution, taking second place among all the universities across the whole continent of Asia. What is more, NUS has been consistently moving up the overall world university rankings, which suggests that it is poised, one day, to become Asia's undisputed number one university.”
