A tradition which began more than 50 years ago, Rag and Flag is a signature NUS event that unites the entire NUS community. On Flag Day, NUS students approach members of the public for donations in aid of the beneficiaries. Students put up performances on Rag Day, celebrated after Flag Day, as a show of appreciation to the public for their contributions to the less privileged.

This year's Rag Day, which featured a dazzling showcase of 14 stunning performances put up by some 650 students from 17 NUS Halls of Residence, Faculties and Schools, was graced by Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong as the Guest-of-Honour.

NUSSU President Mr Soh Yi Da said, “NUSSU Rag and Flag is a time where NUS students gather to contribute back to the very same society that has nurtured us. While we embrace our heritage and longstanding tradition, this is also a demonstration of the strong solidarity, compassion and concern for the community at large by the students of NUS and the NUS community.”

This year, NUSSU Rag Day featured its first-ever charity fun fair themed “Carnival of Dreams”. Beneficiaries from the Community Chest charity programmes and visitors enjoyed a host of fun-filled games and activities at 21 booths that were spread across three zones – Land of Terrors, Youth Town and Enchanted Lane, as well as “open guitar case” performances by NUS' very own talents. Visitors and members of the public also contributed to the good cause through the purchase of carnival coupons.
