Anthropic’s call for AI development pause deserves attention. It also raises questions

In early June, Anthropic, a leading AI company, called for a worldwide pause in frontier AI development, warning that latest AI systems are at the brink of escaping human control and could soon go rogue.

Professor Jungpil Hahn, Provost’s Chair Professor at the Department of Information Systems and Analytics and Director of NUS Fintech Lab at the School of Computing, echoed the concern but pointed out that Anthropic’s warning lacked helpful guidelines or recommendations going forward.

Prof Hahn highlighted that enforcing the pause would be difficult, and that Anthropic also has vested interest in pushing for the pause. Although Singapore is not at the forefront of AI development, Prof Hanh emphasised that the way we and our regional partners approach AI adoption across education, public administration and professional fields will determine whether we maintain the institutional and human skills needed to engage effectively in AI governance.
