COVID-19 vaccine deaths a reminder that benefits of vaccination must outweigh risks of side effects

No vaccine or medication in the world comes without side effects. However, the two unfortunate COVID-19 vaccine-associated deaths in Singapore presents a challenge for the scientific and medical research community to make better and safer vaccines for future emerging infectious diseases.

Infectious disease experts Professor Ooi Eng Eong from Duke-NUS Medical School and Professor Paul Ananth Tambyah from the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine weigh in on the matter and noted that understanding the cause of vaccine side effects is one solution to help boost the benefits of vaccination. They suggested that the development of a detailed map of the molecular processes that lead to side effects and rare severe adverse events would lay the foundation for the development of safer vaccines.
