Duke-NUS Medical School study on social support for older adults
A study by Asst Prof Rahul Malhotra and Mr Shannon Ang from the Centre for Ageing Research and Education at Duke-NUS Medical School found that when older adults receive various forms of social support from family members, their depressive symptoms went down. The study also found that being the recipients of help also made them feel they were not in control of their lives and this loss of control in turn also increased their depressive symptoms, counteracting the positive effect of receiving the aid.
