Floating homes, parks, facilities – a reality in Singapore that’s closer than you think?

A group from the Dept of Architecture at NUS School of Design and Environment is studying the feasibility of megacities on decommissioned oil rigs. With almost 6.5 billion people living in cities by 2050, they suggested that greener cities with towering, self-sufficient settlements that come with wastewater treatment, energy-generating and food-growing systems, were the way forward. In addition, the lack of “sterile” sea space for testing could change with the unveiling of the Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore, a joint venture by NUS and A*STAR.
