International Sociological Association Research Committee 28 on Social Stratification & Mobility Conference
The Centre for Family and Population Research at the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences hosted the International Sociological Association Research Committee 28 on Social Stratification & Mobility Conference from 26-28 May 2016. Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who is also Coordinating Minister for Economic and Social Policies, delivered the opening address at the conference which was held in Singapore and Southeast Asia for the first time and was attended by 250 academics from over 30 countries.
Among the research studies showcased at the Conference was a study on how females and non-Malay are likelier to enroll in elite junior colleges; and another which found that women and the less educated are most likely among the elderly to live alone, while those with more children and higher education are less likely to do so. There was also a study which found that secondary school students in Integrated Programme schools are more confident of attaining at least a university degree compared to their peers in other schools.
