Leadership change at NUH
Associate Professor Eugene Liu, who is with NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS Medicine), has succeeded Adjunct Associate Professor Joe Sim as CEO of National University Hospital (NUH) on 1 September 2016.
Assoc Prof Liu, who has worked in NUH for 19 years, previously served as the Clinical Director and then Head of NUS Anaesthesia, where he oversaw the expansion of the department and the establishment of a residency system of specialist training in anaesthesia. He also served as Assistant Dean (Academic Affairs) at NUS Medicine, focusing on human resource management and international relations. In July 2015, he was appointed Deputy CEO of NUH, where he assisted in the hospital’s strategic goals in clinical care, teaching and research.
Adj Assoc Prof Sim, CEO of NUH since 1 March 2009, will now be focusing on his strategic role as Deputy Chief Executive of the National University Health System (NUHS). He holds adjunct positions at NUS Medicine, the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health and NUS Business School.
Adj Assoc Prof Sim led the development of the NUH Kent Ridge campus master plan, including the remodelling of the Main Building and the completion of the NUH Medical Centre, which allowed the hospital to cater to the increased volume of patients and its expanded services. Under his leadership, NUH’s capacity increased from 935 beds and 848,000 patients to 1,250 beds and more than 1 million patients. He was the driving force behind many of the initiatives to improve patient care, such as the opening of Singapore’s first family medicine clinic through collaboration with Frontier Health Group, a private healthcare provider. His passion in talent development saw him transforming the education and teaching culture at the hospital to create a strong pipeline of healthcare professionals and leaders for NUH/NUHS.

The role of NUS Medicine Dean Associate Professor Yeoh Khay Guan as NUHS Deputy Chief Executive (Academic Enterprise) has been refined. Besides his responsibilities in ensuring a strong synergy between NUS and NUHS, he will be taking on governance oversight of the National Speciality Centres as Chairman, as well as overseeing the development of a new initiative to train lay persons in healthcare.
Associate Professor Quek Swee Chye from NUS Paediatrics has been appointed Chairman-designate of the Medical Board of NUH, in addition to his current roles as Deputy Chairman of the Medical Board and Head of the Office of Clinical Governance.
