New combinations increase flexibility
Students entering NUS in the new academic year can opt for direct admission to some 70 new combinations where they can undertake a single-degree major paired with a second major, that is, Double Major; or a minor, that is, Major-Minor. The palette of combinations spans 16 subject areas in Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as Science and Technology.
Incoming students in Academic Year 2017/18 will benefit from some 30 new Double Major combinations and about 40 Major-Minor combinations. Some of the interesting combinations include Double Major in Business Administration with Communications & New Media; and Engineering with a minor in Economics.
Direct admissions means interested prospective students can now select from these subject combinations when they apply to NUS. Admission to NUS is currently on-going.
NUS Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost Professor Tan Eng Chye said that as a comprehensive university, NUS offers students great flexibility and choice in customising their education based on their interests and aspirations. In addition to 56 bachelor's degrees, NUS offers 71 double degrees, 33 joint degrees and 24 concurrent degrees.
“It is very important in the new economy that the students have good training in two different areas. It’s a way of cushioning yourself. If you work in a particular area which becomes obsolete, there’s something you can fall back on,” Prof Tan said.
“In recent years, we have also observed that students have been gaining knowledge in multiple fields and very often, outside of their core disciplines,” he explained. The broad suite of combinations was borne out of the need to encourage students to expand their domain expertise.
Prof Tan hopes that with the new initiative, more students would be encouraged to take up a Double Major or Major-Minor combination during their candidature in NUS. The University would be proposing selected modules — curated from the 2,000 modules offered every semester — for the Double Major or Major-Minor combinations.
