New Trustees on NUS Board

The University welcomes three new members to its Board of Trustees on 1 April 2016. The new NUS Trustees are Mr Loh Chin Hua, CEO and Executive Director, Keppel Corporation Limited; Dr Leslie Teo, Chief Economist and Director, Economics & Investment Strategy, GIC Private Limited; and Mr Wong Fong Fui, Chairman and Group CEO, Boustead Singapore Limited.
“Chin Hua, Leslie and Fong Fui are outstanding leaders in their fields — NUS is indeed privileged to welcome them to our Board. The University will benefit greatly from their global experience and expertise as we strive to excel as global university in a rapidly changing higher education landscape, and to differentiate ourselves by making a deep impact through research excellence,” said Mr Wong Ngit Liong, Chairman of the NUS Board.
Mr Loh has over 25 years of real estate investing and fund management, spanning the US, Europe and Asia. He chairs several companies within Keppel including Keppel Offshore and Marine, Keppel Land and Keppel Infrastructure Holdings. In 2002, he founded Keppel Group company Alpha Investment Partners, which today has accumulated over $12 billion in assets under its management.
Dr Teo, who also comes from the investment industry, oversees the team responsible for asset allocation, total portfolio construction and identification of key long-term trends that would impact GIC’s portfolio. He is a Council Member of the Economic Society of Singapore, a non-profit organisation of economists and other professionals interested in economics, and a Board Member of Pacific Pension and Investment Institute, a global organisation of institutional investors.
Mr Wong, a Co-opted Member of the Entrepreneurship Committee at NUS, is credited for restoring the 188-year-old Boustead into a profitable industrial real estate, energy, environmental engineering and technology group. Among his achievements are the inception and privatisation of Myanmar Airways International and the transformation of the near-bankrupt conglomerate QAF.
NUS Chairman Mr Wong expressed his gratitude to three Trustees who have stepped down from the Board — Mr Hans-Dieter Bott, former Managing Director of Siemens Private Limited; Ms Chan Chia Lin, Director of Holywell Private Limited; and Mr Han Fook Kwang, The Straits Times’ Editor-at-Large. Mr Bott and Ms Chan stepped down on 31 March 2016 while Mr Han’s stint with the Board ended on 31 December 2015.
This year also marks NUS’ 10th year of corporatisation, when it became an autonomous university with the ability to exercise greater flexibility to make far-reaching changes to create a unique educational experience for students, as well as compete globally.
“Over the past decade, the greater autonomy and strong support from the government has allowed NUS to position itself strategically, and devote resources to new initiatives and distinctive programmes. NUS today is a thriving community comprising many of the brightest students in Singapore, with some of the best faculty and researchers in their fields. The University’s strong performance in the latest 2016 Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings by Subject — which placed NUS among the world’s 10 best universities for 13 subjects and Asia’s best across 25 subjects — is testament to the progress that NUS has achieved in the last 10 years,” said Mr Wong.
