Distinguished NUS geographer Brenda Yeoh awarded Lund University honorary doctorate
Professor Brenda Yeoh, Distinguished Professor from the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, was conferred an Honorary Doctorate by Lund University in Sweden on 29 May 2026 in recognition of her outstanding contributions to research on migration, mobilities, urbanisation and social change.
The honorary doctorate is among the highest distinctions awarded by Lund University and is conferred on individuals who have made significant contributions to academia, the University or society.
A globally renowned scholar, Prof Yeoh has advanced understanding of how migration, gender, family dynamics and identity shape societies in Asia and beyond. Her research has generated critical insights into issues of belonging, care, citizenship and social reproduction, while influencing scholarship across multiple disciplines, including geography, sociology, urban studies and development studies.
Prof Yeoh’s longstanding collaborations with researchers at Lund have helped foster international partnerships and inspired new research directions in the study of migration and social change.
Prof Yeoh said, “I am honoured to receive this recognition from Lund University. This doctorate reflects not just my own work, but the collaborative efforts of many colleagues and research partners over the years. My longstanding relationship with researchers at Lund has been intellectually enriching, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to research endeavours about migration and social change that transcend borders.”
A member of the NUS academic community for more than three decades, Prof Yeoh has taught in the Department of Geography since 1991. She is also a member of the Migration and Mobilities Cluster at the Asia Research Institute, where her work has contributed to deeper understanding of migration, transnationalism, gender, family and social change in Asia.
