NUS President conferred 2015 CASE Asia-Pacific Leadership Award
The President of the National University of Singapore (NUS) Professor Tan Chorh Chuan has been conferred the 2015 Asia-Pacific Leadership Award by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
CASE is an international association of educational institutions that supports over 3,700 schools, colleges and universities worldwide in developing their alumni relations, communications, fundraising and marketing operations. The CASE Asia-Pacific Leadership Award recognises CASE member institutional heads who actively support advancement, create a vision and inspire others,establish a positive image for their institution while leading it to higher levels of success, increase their institution’s stature in the community and encourage innovation and risk-taking among employees.
CASE President Ms Sue Cunningham said, “CASE is pleased and honoured to recognise Professor Tan as the 2015 recipient of the CASE Asia-Pacific Leadership Award. As President of the National University of Singapore and through his impressive international work in academe and medicine, Prof Tan has had a profound impact upon education, health and society. He has also been an impressive champion for institutional advancement. He is a creative, visionary leader and true champion of the power of education and the work that professionals do on behalf of their institutions in advancing education.”
Prof Tan received the award from Ms Tricia King, CASE Vice-President for International Operations, at a presentation ceremony held at NUS earlier today.
“I am delighted and privileged to accept this award on behalf of NUS – in particular Chairman Mr Wong Ngit Liong and members of the NUS Board of Trustees, my fellow colleagues in the leadership team, our faculty, staff, alumni, students, and benefactors of the University. I am indeed grateful to CASE for this signal honour. CASE has long been a true champion for professionals in education who work in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and allied areas. It has made a big difference around the world, and grown its community in the Asia Pacific. To receive this prestigious award from CASE, is therefore a privilege,” said Prof Tan.
Highlights of Professor Tan Chorh Chuan’s achievements
As President of one of Asia’s top universities since 2008, Prof Tan’s leadership is percipient and visionary. Through his myriad roles in administration, management and research, Prof Tan has created and continues to create profound impact in medical education, advancement and leadership. Under his steady leadership, NUS has risen to become one of the world’s leading universities and a distinctive institution in Asia.
As President of NUS, Prof Tan is instrumental in advocating NUS’ global outlook and Asian orientation. He has tirelessly championed the advancement of education through his global leadership roles such as Chairperson of the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) (from 2008 to 2012), Chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Leaders Forum (GULF), and a member of the World Economic Forum’s Science Advisory Committee. Prof Tan is the first university president to be selected by his peers to chair two important international associations - IARU and GULF – and he has worked assiduously to strengthen both world-ranked institutions. In both arenas, he shaped the debate about important issues facing universities, both as universities and as contributors to society and the common good.
On the national front, Prof Tan is a champion of ensuring that NUS provides service to Singapore, through his various leadership roles such as: Director of Medical Services at the Singapore Ministry of Health (from 2000 to 2004); inaugural Chief Executive of the National University Health System in 2008 and currently Chairman of its Board; Deputy Chairman of Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research; and as Chairman of the Central Provident Fund Advisory Panel, an advisory panel appointed by the Singapore Ministry of Manpower.
Prof Tan is also a staunch advocate of Advancement, both in the form of actively engaging NUS’ 242,000 alumni (2014) spread across 100 countries and in the area of fundraising. Each year, the NUS Office of Alumni Relations organises over 90 events involving the University’s 66 Alumni Groups and 18 Overseas Chapters, to keep NUS alumni abreast of the University’s development.
