Half of the 10 projects honoured at the recent IES (Institution of Engineers, Singapore) Prestigious Engineering Achievement Awards 2018 were developed by NUS Engineering researchers.

This included a novel 4-in-1 smart utilities plant that can produce electricity, water, air-conditioning and heat at the same time and in an environmentally friendly and cost-effective manner developed by NUS Mechanical Engineering researchers led by Associate Professor Ernest Chua; a versatile low motion semisubmersible that can be used for accommodation, drilling or production in harsh, deep water and arctic environments developed by the Keppel-NUS Corporate Laboratory where NUS Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Chow Yean Khow is Co-Programme Leader; and renewable air filters created by regenerating molecular building blocks, the brainchild of researchers led by Assistant Professor Tan Swee Ching from NUS Materials Science and Engineering. The teams were honoured in the Applied Research and Development category.

Other projects included the Soft Robotic Surgical Gripper System, a low-cost, portable surgical device for fine tissue manipulation developed by NUS Biomedical Engineering Assistant Professor Raye Yeow and his team who were the sole winners in the Technology Innovation category, and a 16-channel multicapacitive sensor interface developed by NUS Electrical and Computer Engineering Associate Professor Heng Chun Huat and team who took home the Young Creators Award.

The awards celebrate the most noteworthy achievements of engineers in Singapore in the past year, recognising their significant contributions to inspiring engineering progress and enhancing the quality of life in the nation.
