NUS trustees, alumni on Constitutional Commission

NUS Chairman Mr Wong Ngit Liong, and NUS Trustees Professor Chan Heng Chee and Mr Abdullah Tarmugi have been appointed to the Constitutional Commission tasked to review and make recommendations on specific aspects of the Elected Presidency.

Chaired by Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon, the other members on the nine-member Commission are Supreme Court Judge Justice Tay Yong Kwang; Mr Eddie Teo, Chairman of the Public Service Commission; Mr Chua Thian Poh, Chairman and CEO of Ho Bee Land Limited; Mr Philip Ng, CEO of Far East Organisation; and Mr Peter Seah, Chairman of DBS Bank. Chief Justice Menon, Justice Tay and Mr Seah are also NUS alumni.

The intention to form the Constitutional Commission was first announced by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in January. The areas of study to be undertaken by the Commission include eligibility criteria for Presidential candidates, opportunities for minorities to be elected, and the framework governing the exercise of the President’s custodial powers.
