Pillars of educational success

Agility and drive; recruiting top-class talent; innovation and differentiation; and establishing global partnerships — these are the key factors for growth and development of universities in a complex and constantly changing education landscape. In an op-ed for Times Higher Education (THE) earlier this week, NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan revealed the four-pronged strategy adopted by the University on its road to success. NUS was recently named Asia’s top university in the latest THE Asia University Rankings.
Today, universities the world over are coming to terms with sweeping trends such as the impact of technology on the nature of work, proliferation of educational providers and new modes of delivery. There are also rising expectations that universities should actively contribute to addressing societal challenges. Prof Tan shared how NUS has proactively created, identified and seized new opportunities within this shifting landscape in order to excel and add value. The pursuit has entailed a constant drive for improvement, nurturing highly talented academic staff in strategically chosen fields, continuous innovation and deepening global linkages for academic leapfrogging.
Moving forward, Prof Tan advises universities to grow their ability to adjust and reinvent themselves, while becoming increasingly relevant to the community.
