Prof Ooi Beng Chin wins the 2020 ACM SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award

NUS Computing Distinguished Professor Ooi Beng Chin has won the 2020 ACM SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award for his innovative research and for devising and deploying innovative large-scale systems to manage and analyse data.

The award recognises Prof Ooi’s ground-breaking research and his success in building end-to-end solutions, from data cleaning, through data curation with human-in-loop (crowdsourcing) and big data processing, all the way to complex (machine learning and deep learning based) data analytics.

The database systems Prof Ooi has developed over the years include Apache Software Foundation top level project Apache SINGA, a distributed platform for deep learning, and COOL, an online cohort analytical processing system that supports various types of data analytics, including online analytical processing (OLAP) and cohort analysis.
