Tribunal ruling will affect many other states' claims

Assoc Prof Robert Beckman, who is from the Centre for International Law at NUS and NUS Faculty of Law, discussed the elements of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos), and reviewed the ruling on the maritime dispute case brought by the Philippines against China. He opined that Unclos establishes a legal order for the oceans that has not only withstood the test of time, but is also increasingly important.
