What happens when tech giant Nokia transforms a village with a promising factory – then bolts
Ms Vani Swarupa Murali, Research Analyst from the Institute of South Asian Studies at NUS, discussed the repercussions of Nokia’s hiring of women villagers for its factory in the Indian village of Sriperumbudur in 2005 and its subsequent departure in 2014. She opined that the challenge is to better understand the opportunity costs involved in such situations for the rights of women.
