Asst Prof He Xiaogang wins inaugural Global Climate Research Prize
Assistant Professor He Xiaogang from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering under the College of Design and Engineering at NUS has been conferred the inaugural Global Climate Research Prize, a biennial philanthropic initiative founded by the University of Cambridge’s Clare Hall college and LUT University. He was selected from a group of four outstanding finalists from Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley, and University of Toronto.
Asst Prof He’s research applies climate science, data analytics and resilience frameworks to better understand and manage extreme weather events. By demonstrating how excess floodwater can be captured and stored for use during dry periods, his work is helping to shape practical solutions for more reliable water management.
“Winning the inaugural Global Climate Research Prize is beyond anything I could have imagined. I am deeply grateful to NUS, the College of Design and Engineering, and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering for providing the exceptional research environment and unwavering support that made this possible,” said Asst Prof He.
The €200,000 (S$297,000) prize will be awarded to NUS to support the continued development and expansion of the winning research programme. Asst Prof He said the prize money will be directed towards both fundamental and applied research, with a focus on building climate-resilient and climate-smart solutions for water, food and energy security across Southeast Asia and beyond.
