Asst Prof Pieremanuele Canepa clinches ACS Chemistry of Materials 2023 Best Paper Award

NUS Assistant Professor Pieremanuele Canepa from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the NUS College of Design and Engineering has received the Chemistry of Materials 2023 Best Paper Award conferred by the American Chemical Society (ACS). The award honours the authors of a research article that has made notable impact in the field of materials chemistry and recognises the importance of team effort in research.

The winning research paper by Asst Prof Canepa and his research team, Devil is in the Defects: Electronic Conductivity in Solid Electrolytes, challenges the current state of solid-state battery research by treating solid batteries not only as ion conductors but also as electronic semiconductors.

Asst Prof Canepa’s team, which comprises interdisciplinary and international members, also exemplifies the cross-pollination of ideas between semiconductor physics experts and battery materials scientists who share a common interest in functional materials.

The findings of this study could lead to better design of electrolytes, improving the efficiency of all-solid-state batteries.
