Asst Prof Xue Shifeng wins L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Singapore Award 2023

Assistant Professor Xue Shifeng from the Department of Biological Sciences at NUS Faculty of Science was among three women researchers in Singapore who received the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award 2023 at an awards ceremony held on 22 November 2023. She was recognised for her work on epigenetic repression in development and disease, focusing on human congenital disorders. Simply put, she studies how genes turn on and off, in embryonic development and in disease.

Asst Prof Xue’s work has not only expanded the understanding of embryonic development but has also provided insights into human congenital disorders. One of her remarkable achievements involves the identification of genetic mutations causing individuals to be born without a nose, unravelling a profound understanding of the gene's role in early embryonic development.

The L’Oréal-UNESCO Fellowship for Women in Science, a global initiative launched in Singapore in 2009, provides an endowment to help women scientists advance their research. To-date, 27 local women scientists have received this award.
