Prof Qiu Cheng-Wei conferred the 2026 Joseph Fraunhofer Award/Robert M. Burley Prize
Professor Qiu Cheng-Wei from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering under the College of Design and Engineering at NUS has been honoured with the 2026 Joseph Fraunhofer Award/Robert M. Burley Prize by Optica, a society dedicated to promoting the generation, application, archiving and dissemination of knowledge in the field of optics and photonics.
Prof Qiu, who is also the Director of the Optical Science and Engineering Center, is recognised for his pioneering works in interfacial optics of low-dimensional and van der Waals materials with photonic nanostructures, fusing multiscale symmetry, topology, and geometry from within natural crystals and meta-optics.
Established in 1982, the Fraunhofer Award recognises significant research accomplishments in the field of optical engineering and honours the contributions of Joseph Fraunhofer to the field. The prize was introduced in 1992 in memory of Robert M. Burley, the award’s first recipient, who exemplified many of the highest attributes of the optical engineer.
