The paradox of strong family ties in the integration of immigrants
Research analyst Mr Eugene Tan and Dr Leong Chan-Hoong, Head of the Social Lab at the Institute of Policy Studies at NUS highlighted key findings from their research on Singaporeans’ attitudes to immigration. They opined that a way to improve the level of trust in outsiders without weakening family ties is to broaden the boundaries of the family by creating more opportunities for the inclusion of strangers, especially immigrants, into situations or activities normally reserved for family members. They suggested homestays as an example of such opportunities.
