The role of the emperor in Japan's history

Dr Zhang Yun from the East Asian Institute at NUS examined the reasons for the Japanese monarchy’s liberal views through the emperor’s recent call for ‘deep remorse’ over Japan’s role in World War II. He noted that the Japanese emperor plays a pivotal role in balancing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s right-wing policies and can thus prevent Japanese politics from becoming overly conservative.
