Dr Max Hülsey, Research Fellow from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NUS Faculty of Engineering, has been awarded the prestigious Schmidt Science Fellowship. Dr Hülsey is the first NUS researcher and the second from an Asian university to be accorded this Fellowship.

The Schmidt Fellowship is awarded annually by Schmidt Futures in partnership with the Rhodes Trust with the mission to accelerate discovery through interdisciplinary science. Dr Hülsey is among 28 early-career scientists elected to the 2021 cohort.

The 2021 Fellows will each undertake an interdisciplinary pivot in their research, focusing on areas such as preventing future pandemics, creating sustainable energy systems, improving water and food security, developing more personalised and equitable healthcare, and understanding and mitigating the climate crisis.
